This byway crosses the Ka'u district on the southern slopes of Mauna Loa, the most remote and least developed corner of the Big Island. It passes Punalu'u, a striking black-sand beach where green sea turtles often haul out, and runs near the southernmost point in the United States. The dry, windswept landscape rises from the coast toward the massive volcano above.
