Fort Henry Historic Byway is a roughly 90-mile scenic drive across eastern Idaho, running from Rexburg to Island Park via the St. Anthony Sand Dunes. The route takes its name from Fort Henry, an 1810 fur-trading outpost built by Andrew Henry's party and generally regarded as the first Euro-American settlement in what is now Idaho; a monument and National Historic Landmark marker at the site preserve that history today. Along the way the byway skirts the sand dunes, where visitors hike or ride ATVs across shifting terrain, and follows Henry's Fork of the Snake River, prized by fly anglers for its trout water. Camas Meadows Battle Grounds, a site from the 1877 Nez Perce War, and stretches of Targhee-Caribou National Forest round out the drive's mix of history and high-desert scenery. Amenities thin out fast once you leave Rexburg, so travelers gas up before starting, and portions of this Idaho byway close seasonally, making late spring through fall the most reliable window to drive it.
