This byway leads toward Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America — deeper even than the Grand Canyon — where the Snake River has carved nearly 8,000 feet below the surrounding peaks on the Idaho–Oregon line. The route crosses high forest and ranchland before dropping toward the canyon rim and the dammed reservoirs of the Snake. The remote country is rich in elk, bighorn sheep, and raptors.
