The Pend Oreille Scenic Byway covers a short but dramatic 33.4 miles, running east from US 95 north of Sandpoint along Idaho 200 to the Montana state line. The two-lane road follows the rocky northern shore of Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho's largest lake and among the five deepest in the United States, a basin carved by glaciers and later scoured by the catastrophic floodwaters of Glacial Lake Missoula. Frequent scenic turnouts let drivers linger over water views across farmland and river deltas along the way. The surrounding forests of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and red cedar support deer, elk, and moose, along with black bears and the occasional grizzly, while the byway's proximity to the Clark Fork River adds year-round recreation to a drive that, mile for mile, packs in an unusual amount of water and mountain scenery.
