The Western Heritage Historic Byway runs about 21 miles south from Meridian through Kuna to Swan Falls Dam on the Snake River. It's one of only four Idaho byways to earn full National Scenic Byway status, a designation the FHWA awarded in September 2005. From Meridian, the route follows Idaho 69 and Swan Falls Road through the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, home to the densest concentration of nesting raptors in North America — up to sixteen species nest here, with nine more passing through on migration. Along the way, the byway reaches Celebration Park, Idaho's only archaeological park, where petroglyphs carved by prehistoric hunter-gatherers cover basalt boulders, and Dedication Point, which overlooks the sheer cliffs of the Snake River Canyon. The drive ends at Swan Falls Dam, one of the oldest hydroelectric dams on the Snake River, a fitting endpoint for a route built around raptors, ancient rock art, and the canyon itself.
