Stone Park Loop winds through Stone State Park on the bluffs above Sioux City, Iowa, the northern gateway to the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway. Civilian Conservation Corps crews based here from 1935 to 1939 built much of what still stands: rustic entrance portals, the Calumet shelter, and a fieldstone lodge, all constructed from native limestone. The 14,000-square-foot Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center anchors the park today, with exhibits on the geology and wildlife of the Loess Hills and roughly three miles of trails leading out to panoramic prairie overlooks. Longer routes climb to Mount Lucia and tie into the park's larger trail network. Because most of the park's high points face west across the Missouri River valley toward Nebraska and South Dakota, sunset is when Stone Park earns its local reputation as one of the best overlooks in Sioux City.
