This byway crosses the Gypsum Hills (or Red Hills) of south-central Kansas near Medicine Lodge, a surprising landscape of red-soil mesas, buttes, and canyons capped with white gypsum. The terrain looks more like the desert Southwest than the expected flat Kansas plains. Cattle ranches spread across the rugged country.
