Old DBBB is the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway, a rugged, 500-plus-mile network of gravel, trail, and pavement through eastern Kentucky's Red River Gorge. It crosses Powell, Estill, Lee, Wolfe, Menifee, and other counties within Daniel Boone National Forest, following historic county roads, some dating to the late 1800s, through the Appalachian foothills, past high sandstone cliff-lines and dense hardwood forest. About two-thirds of the network is paved or gravel and passable in an ordinary vehicle, while the remaining third is unpaved backcountry best suited to a 4WD vehicle with good mud tires. It's designed primarily for licensed, street-legal off-road travel rather than a typical paved scenic drive, appealing to overlanders and off-road enthusiasts more than casual sightseers. Wildlife sightings are common, and the route offers a far more remote, backcountry alternative to the paved scenic byways elsewhere in the Red River Gorge area.
