Pine Mountain Road is a Kentucky state scenic byway climbing over 2,800-foot Pine Mountain in the state's far southeastern corner, near the Virginia line. The route follows the historic Little Shepherd Trail from Whitesburg on US 119 to Oven Fork, tracing the long, narrow ridge of Pine Mountain through Eastern Kentucky's coal country with sweeping views over the surrounding hills. It passes Pine Mountain State Resort Park, Kentucky's first state park, which offers 12 miles of hiking trails including the popular Chained Rock Trail leading to a giant chain-and-boulder landmark above Pineville, along with the Laurel Cove Amphitheater and a lodge known for fresh catfish dinners. The short byway is a favorite for its ridge-top overlooks and easy access to the state park's recreation, making it a good half-day stop for travelers exploring the Appalachian corner of the state.
