The US 68 Scenic Byway connects Lebanon and Paducah across Kentucky's Bluegrass and Pennyrile regions, following a road with roots as an old buffalo trace. Later an 1800s Shaker road, the byway winds through rolling hills and pastures typical of central Kentucky, framed by the black-and-white plank fences and limestone rock walls associated with the state's horse farms, alongside tobacco fields and mansion-scale horse barns closer to Lebanon. The route also skirts historic Shaker settlements from the road's earlier life as a religious community's thoroughfare, giving the drive a layered history from Native American trail to utopian religious community to modern highway. It's one of the longer named scenic byways in the state, cutting a diagonal path across several distinct Kentucky landscapes rather than staying within a single region.
