The Louisiana leg of the Great River Road follows the lower Mississippi between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, the storied "River Road" lined with antebellum plantation homes. Oak Alley's quarter-mile tunnel of live oaks, the restored Creole plantation at Laura, and the sobering Whitney museum of slavery sit along the route, between sugarcane fields and the river levee. It ends in the heart of New Orleans.
