This byway crosses the Kisatchie National Forest, the only national forest in Louisiana, through the surprisingly rugged Kisatchie Hills. Stands of longleaf pine, sandstone outcrops, and mesa-like "hills" rise above the surrounding flatwoods, a landscape sometimes called "Louisiana's Outback" of the uplands. It is a quiet forest drive far from the bayou stereotype.
