San Bernardo Byway follows Louisiana Highway 46 from just east of New Orleans to the fishing village of Shell Beach. The route runs through St. Bernard Parish, settled between 1778 and 1783 by roughly 2,000 Isleños, immigrants from Spain's Canary Islands drawn by fertile land and abundant fishing and trapping. Their descendants' culture is preserved at the Isleños Museum and Multicultural Center, which recreates six typical homes filled with period artifacts. Beyond it, the byway passes through Hopedale, Delacroix, and Yscloskey before ending at Shell Beach, where shrimp and oyster boats still work the same waters the Isleños settled more than two centuries ago.
