The Fish River Scenic Byway follows Route 11 for 37 miles through Aroostook County, connecting Portage to Fort Kent along Maine's far northern border with New Brunswick. A National Scenic Byway, the route passes Eagle Lake and opens onto views of Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest peak, along with rolling wildflower meadows shaped by 19th-century French-Acadian settlement that still defines the region's culture today. At its northern end, historic Fort Kent preserves an 1839 blockhouse built to defend the United States' claim on the northern woods during a boundary dispute with Britain, a rare surviving structure from that era. The route stays heavily forested for most of its length, and wildlife including moose, eagles, beaver, landlocked salmon, and brook trout are common, making camping, fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling popular pursuits alongside simple scenic driving through one of the least-populated corners of the Northeast.
