This entry, listed under its earlier name 'Seboomook Scenic Byway,' now goes by the Moosehead Lake Scenic Byway. It follows Route 15 for roughly 20 miles between Greenville and Jackman through Maine's central highlands, skirting Moosehead Lake, New England's largest lake at over 74,000 acres, before continuing through the Moose River Valley, a landscape of dense forest, remote ponds, and the Seboomook Unit, a 41,000-acre public conservation area along the lake's northern shore. Greenville, the byway's southern gateway, serves as the primary access point for boating, fishing, and moose-watching on the lake, while the drive toward Jackman crosses increasingly remote and sparsely populated country. Winter sports, snowmobiling, and hiking round out the recreation available along a byway defined less by roadside landmarks than by access to one of the largest undeveloped wilderness areas remaining in the eastern United States.
