The Maine High Peaks Scenic Byway follows State Route 27 for about 50 miles from the historic mill town of Kingfield north to Coburn Gore on the Quebec border. It threads some of Maine's tallest mountains along the way. In Kingfield, the byway runs beside the swift Carrabassett River with views of Mount Abraham and the Bigelow Range, then continues past Sugarloaf Mountain, one of New England's premier ski destinations, en route to Stratton and Eustis. North of Stratton, the road skirts the shoreline of man-made Flagstaff Lake and passes through Cathedral Pines, a 220-acre stand of red pines up to 200 years old and one of the largest surviving patches of old-growth forest in Maine. The byway's northern stretch also retraces part of the path Benedict Arnold and 1,100 American troops marched in 1775 during their failed attempt to capture Quebec City, adding Revolutionary War history to a drive already built around skiing, hiking, and paddling.
