Horses and Hounds Scenic Byway

The Horses and Hounds Scenic Byway runs about 70 miles through the hills and valleys north of Baltimore, from Hunt Valley to the Hampton National Historic Site in Towson. It takes its name from the fox hunting and horse breeding that wealthy Baltimoreans brought to this countryside generations ago. The route moves through Towson north toward Monkton, west to Hampstead, then south through Reisterstown before returning east near Shawan Road and Cockeysville, past rolling valleys that visitors often compare to the English countryside. Stops include Glyndon, a 19th-century Victorian summer community whose 1869 St. John's Episcopal Church still holds an annual Thanksgiving 'Blessing of the Hounds'; the Maryland Hunt Cup steeplechase, run every spring in the Worthington Valley; Sagamore Farms, a former Vanderbilt-owned thoroughbred breeding operation; and Ladew Topiary Gardens, 22 acres of sculpted shrubbery and themed flower gardens around a historic manor house.
