The Mason and Dixon Byway runs 143 miles west to east along Maryland's northern border with Pennsylvania, an easygoing country drive that mixes history with farmland and wineries. Its eastern anchor is Conowingo, where the byway crosses the Lower Susquehanna River atop the Conowingo Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric stations in the country; an overlook just west of the dam gives views of bald eagles working the water below, alongside some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the region, and connects to the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway Trail. Along its length, the byway threads working farms and passes wineries including Old Westminster, Basignani, Serpent Ridge Vineyard, and Dove Valley Vineyard & Winery, making it as much an agritourism route as a historical one. Named for the 18th-century surveyors' line it roughly parallels, the byway favors a slower, rural pace over any single dramatic landmark.
