The Mountain Maryland Byway covers roughly 193 miles through the Appalachian highlands of Garrett and Allegany counties. It strings together elevated ridges, forested valleys, and river corridors on US 219, US 40, MD 135, MD 51, and other state roads. Following US 219 to McHenry reaches Wisp Ski Resort and Deep Creek Lake State Park, where the spring-fed lake offers 65 miles of shoreline for boating and water skiing in summer and ice fishing in winter. West on Mayhew Inn and Swallow Falls Roads, Swallow Falls State Park shows off the 53-foot Muddy Creek Falls, Maryland's tallest free-falling waterfall, while nearby Herrington Manor State Park adds cross-country ski trails around its own lake. A side trip through Garrett State Forest reaches the Cranesville Subarctic Swamp, a rare bog ecosystem with carnivorous plants, and climbs toward Backbone Mountain, at 3,360 feet the highest point in Maryland.
