The Star-Spangled Banner Byway runs 106 miles from Solomons in Southern Maryland north to Baltimore, retracing War of 1812 sites connected to the writing of the national anthem. The route culminates at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, where Francis Scott Key watched the British bombardment of Baltimore Harbor in September 1814 and was inspired to write the poem that became 'The Star-Spangled Banner.' In the city, the byway also reaches the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, where seamstress Mary Pickersgill sewed the massive garrison flag that flew over the fort during the battle. To the south, stops include the Calvert Marine Museum, with fossils tens of millions of years old and vintage boat tours, and Calvert Cliffs State Park, whose 30 miles of Chesapeake shoreline expose cliffs dating back 10 to 20 million years and more than 600 documented fossil species.
