The Route 116 Scenic Byway runs about 68 miles through western Massachusetts's Pioneer Valley, from the pedestrian-friendly downtown of Adams east to South Deerfield. The Massachusetts Legislature designated the route a scenic byway on August 4, 2008. Passing through Ashfield, Conway, and Deerfield, it crosses rolling farm fields and forested hills as it climbs into and back out of the Berkshire foothills. Windsor State Forest, along the way, features Windsor Jambs Brook, which cuts through a narrow 25-foot-wide gorge with granite walls rising 80 feet on either side, while nearby Savoy Mountain State Forest — at almost 12,000 acres, one of the largest in the byway region — offers hiking past floating bog islands and fishing on North and South Ponds. The route ends at Historic Deerfield, a meticulously preserved 18th-century English settlement whose historic homes and craft collections make a fitting bookend to a drive built around small-town New England character.
