Michigan's Monroe Street Heritage Route follows part of M-125 through downtown Monroe, one of the state's first two heritage routes, approved in 1995. M-125 itself runs 19.38 miles from the Ohio state line at Toledo north to US 24, changing names from South Dixie Highway to Monroe Street at Jones Street in the city center; the heritage designation covers that in-town stretch, where more than 200 years of settlement layers sit side by side. The route runs through the Old Village Historic District along the River Raisin, home to the parish of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, founded in October 1788 by early French settlers, and the St. Mary's Church Complex, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Rather than scenic countryside, the draw here is a dense corridor of residential, religious, and commercial architecture spanning Monroe's growth from a French river outpost to a Lake Erie port town.
