The King of Trails Scenic Byway follows Highway 75 for 414 miles along Minnesota's western border, part of a historic auto trail that once ran from Winnipeg to the Gulf of Mexico. A Kansas City attorney coined the "King of Trails" name in 1917, and a multi-state association marked the route with yellow-banded posts stenciled "KT" until the federal government's 1926 numbering system turned it into US 75. The drive is defined by what locals call "horizontal grandeur," the wide-open sightlines of the prairie that let travelers watch sunrises and sunsets stretch across farm fields and grasslands uninterrupted for miles. Small farming towns, a national monument, and state parks punctuate the route, and more than a thousand wind turbines now turn across the same open plains the old auto trail was built to cross.
