Skyline Parkway is a 28-mile scenic byway that traces the ancient shoreline of Glacial Lake Duluth roughly 600 feet above modern Lake Superior. Running from Becks Road to Seven Bridges Road in two halves, West and East Skyline Parkway, the road was conceived in 1888 by the city's first park board president and is considered Duluth's very first tourist attraction, predating most of the city's other landmarks. From its perch above the hillside, the parkway offers sweeping views of downtown Duluth, the St. Louis River estuary, Lake Superior, and Superior, Wisconsin across the water. Hawk Ridge, at the byway's northern end, is one of the Midwest's premier spots for watching migratory raptors in spring and fall, while the rest of the route offers hiking, cross-country skiing, and access to the Duluth Traverse mountain bike trail that runs the length of the city. Built more than a century ago as a pleasure drive, it remains one of the best vantage points in Duluth for taking in the lake at once.
