Mississippi's Beach Boulevard Scenic Byway follows old Highway 90 for about 13 miles along Hancock County's Gulf Coast. It runs from Cedar Point in Bay St. Louis south through Waveland and Clermont Harbor to the fishing village of Bayou Caddy, split into north and south halves by its crossing of US Highway 90. Resort development took off here after a post-Civil War railroad linked New Orleans and Mobile, filling the coast with beach cottages and grand hotels, most of which have since been rebuilt more than once after Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005 leveled the shoreline. Bay St. Louis's National Historic District, with its restored 19th-century storefronts and gallery scene, anchors the drive's midpoint. The route also threads the Felicity Street Marshes and stops on the Mississippi Gulf Coast Birding Trail, plus a three-mile walking and biking path connecting the beach to downtown. Wide stretches of trucked-in white sand define the coastline, a contrast to the marsh and bayou habitat just inland.
