Mississippi's first designated scenic byway, the Grand Gulf-Raymond Scenic Byway, runs 50 miles from northern Claiborne County to western Hinds County. It follows loess bluffs above the Mississippi River for its first ten miles out of Grand Gulf, then holds to high ground for another forty miles east to Raymond, through farmland largely untouched by modern development. In spring 1863, Ulysses S. Grant used this same rural road to move troops and supplies during the Vicksburg Campaign, turning Grand Gulf into the Union army's main depot, where roughly two million rations were stockpiled and some 200 supply wagons a day rolled out toward the front. The Grand Gulf Military Monument Park preserves earthworks and artifacts from that campaign today. At the byway's eastern end, Raymond's antebellum courthouse, built in 1857-59, served as a Confederate field hospital after the nearby Battle of Raymond and still anchors the town's historic square.
