This byway follows the shore of Lake Koocanusa, a long, narrow reservoir on the Kootenai River that stretches from northwestern Montana across the border into British Columbia — its name blends Kootenai, Canada, and USA. The road overlooks deep blue-green water hemmed by forested mountains, and a tall bridge spans the lake. Nearby, the Kootenai Falls drop in a series of cascades the river once ran free over.
