The St. Regis-Paradise Scenic Byway follows Montana Highway 135 for about 22 miles along the Clark Fork River, a quiet shortcut between St. Regis and Paradise. Tucked inside the Lolo National Forest in northwestern Montana, the route threads from broad, ranch-dotted flats near St. Regis into a narrowing canyon where the highway squeezes between the river and the timbered slopes of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains. St. Regis itself grew up as a logging and mining rail town along the Northern Pacific line before its economy shifted toward fishing, rafting, and pass-through tourism. Drivers use the byway less as a destination than as an alternative to Interstate 90, since it links up with US 200 near Paradise and shaves time off trips bound for Flathead Lake, the National Bison Range, and Glacier National Park. Fall color along the cottonwoods and larch, and easy access to Clark Fork fishing put-ins, make it worth a slow drive rather than a straight-through pass.
