This entry covers the western half of Nebraska's Heritage Highway, the same US Highway 136 corridor documented under the Heritage Highway listing. It's viewed here from its approach into the Republican River Valley near Holdrege. West of Red Cloud and Rock Creek Station, the highway leaves the wooded Missouri River bluffs behind for the prairie-lakes country of south-central Nebraska, where irrigation reservoirs and small natural lakes dot Phelps and Furnas Counties' farmland. Governor Mike Johanns designated the full route a Nebraska state scenic byway in 1999, one of the state's original nine, recognizing the highway's unbroken run of pioneer-era history from the Missouri River to the Republican River Valley. This western stretch trades the wooded river bluffs of Brownville for open, irrigated cropland and small lake-country towns, a genuinely different landscape from the byway's eastern end even though both halves share the same official designation.
