Nebraska's Lewis and Clark Scenic Byway follows Highway 75 for 67 miles from Blair to South Sioux City, tracing the Missouri River along the state's eastern border. The route retraces ground the Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed in 1804 on its way to the Pacific, through country long used by Native American tribes and later fur trappers and traders. On the expedition's recommendation, the US military established Fort Atkinson here in 1820, and the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge now displays more than 200,000 recovered artifacts from the Bertrand, a steamboat that sank in the Missouri River in 1865 and was rediscovered largely intact. South Sioux City, at the byway's northern end, is home to the 100-foot Sgt. Floyd Monument, honoring Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to die during the journey. The drive links some of Nebraska's earliest documented settlements along a river corridor with an unusually dense concentration of expedition-era history.
