Baker Road, Nevada State Route 487, runs 11 miles from the Utah state line near Garrison southwest to US 6/US 50. It passes through the small community of Baker on its way to the entrance of Great Basin National Park. The Nevada Department of Transportation designated it a state scenic byway on March 27, 2000, the same day it designated the connecting Lehman Caves Road (SR 488) and the nearby stretch of US 6/50. The road crosses open, wide desert valley floor along the edge of the Snake Valley, with the sheer wall of the Snake Range and 13,065-foot Wheeler Peak rising ahead for nearly the entire drive. Functionally, this is the approach road rather than the destination: most travelers use it simply to reach Baker before continuing into the national park, but the valley views of the range's east face are a worthwhile scenic experience in their own right.
