This designation covers a 3.5-mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard through downtown Las Vegas, running north from Sahara Avenue to Washington Avenue. It's a separate, quieter segment from the casino-lined Strip farther south. The Federal Highway Administration designated this stretch a National Scenic Byway on October 16, 2009, recognizing its role in downtown Las Vegas's urban core and the city's ongoing revitalization efforts along the corridor. The route passes the Fremont Street Experience district, City Hall, and a mix of historic and newly redeveloped downtown blocks, offering a very different character from the neon-and-megaresort experience travelers associate with 'the Strip' itself. As downtown Las Vegas has invested heavily in redevelopment over the past two decades, this byway designation has functioned partly as a marketing and planning tool to draw attention north of the Strip, into a part of the city built around its original 1905 townsite.
