Deer Creek Road, Nevada State Route 158, covers 8.8 miles through the Spring Mountains west of Las Vegas, connecting Kyle Canyon Road to Lee Canyon Road inside the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Designated a Nevada Scenic Byway, the road links the two main recreation corridors of the Spring Mountains, opening up all-season access to camping, hiking, fishing, and — at Lee Canyon — Nevada's only ski resort. Along the way, hiking trails reach a grove of ancient bristlecone pines, among the oldest living organisms on Earth, some estimated at several thousand years old. The elevation change alone makes this a striking short drive: within about an hour of the Las Vegas Strip's desert heat, the road climbs into pine and fir forest cool enough to hold snow well into spring, a contrast few short byways anywhere in the country can match.
