US 93 crosses Nevada for hundreds of miles as the Great Basin Highway, running from Interstate 15 in North Las Vegas north to Interstate 80 in Wells. The state's Nevada Scenic Byway designation covers the stretch between State Route 318 and the junction of US 6 and US 50. Nevada's first scenic byway, it earns the nickname honestly: for a little over half its length the route stays within the true Great Basin Desert before transitioning into other desert ecosystems farther south toward Las Vegas, making it one of relatively few American highways to cross more than one of the country's major desert regions. Along the way, the byway passes through Lincoln and White Pine counties and the historic mining towns of Caliente and Pioche, and connects travelers to five Nevada state parks as well as Great Basin National Park, threading some of the emptiest, most remote country in the Lower 48.
