US-50 and State Route 28 trace the Nevada shore of Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, famous for water so clear that objects are visible dozens of feet down. The drive overlooks the cobalt coves of Sand Harbor and the granite boulders of the east shore, with the Sierra crest rising across the lake. At over 6,200 feet, Tahoe is ringed by ski country and pine forest.
