The Las Vegas Strip earned the distinction of America's first nighttime scenic byway from the Nevada Department of Transportation on June 30, 1995. The designation recognized the corridor's illuminated casino marquees and neon as a scenic asset unlike any other road in the country. Five years later, on June 15, 2000, the Federal Highway Administration elevated the designation further, naming the Strip an All-American Road, the highest tier the national program awards. The roughly 4-mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard between Mandalay Bay and the Sahara carries the megaresorts most visitors associate with Las Vegas — the Bellagio's fountains, the Eiffel Tower replica at Paris Las Vegas, the pyramid of Luxor, and dozens of other landmark casino-hotels — packed into a walkable, densely built corridor unlike anything else on the federal byway list. Unlike nearly every other All-American Road, this one is defined entirely after dark, when the lighting a daytime drive can't fully convey becomes the point.

To earn the title a road has to be a destination in its own right — offering features so exceptional, across several intrinsic qualities (scenic, natural, historic, cultural, archaeological or recreational), that they can't be found anywhere else.
