State Route 431 climbs from the Reno area over the Mount Rose summit at 8,911 feet — the highest year-round mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada — on its way to Lake Tahoe's north shore. A high overlook near the top frames the blue expanse of Tahoe far below, ringed by peaks. The road passes the Mount Rose ski area and trailheads into the surrounding wilderness.
