This byway climbs from the desert floor into the Spring Mountains and the alpine slopes of Mount Charleston, which tops out near 11,900 feet — high enough to be 20 or 30 degrees cooler than Las Vegas below. Pine and fir forest, limestone cliffs, and ancient bristlecone pines replace the Mojave creosote within a single climb. It is the city's nearest mountain escape.
