Canterbury Shaker Village Byway is a 12-mile scenic drive in central New Hampshire, centered on a Shaker settlement founded more than 200 years ago, about 20 miles from the state capital in Concord. The byway winds past old homesteads, stone walls, and open marshland before reaching Canterbury Shaker Village itself, a National Historic Landmark preserving 25 original Shaker buildings alongside nature trails, botanical gardens, mills, and ponds that trace two centuries of Shaker communal life. Along Meetinghouse Lane and Shaker Road, sugar maples planted by the Shakers generations ago turn the drive into one of the region's better fall-foliage routes, with the working farmland of the Hutchins Forest rounding out the rural scenery. Though the drive itself takes only a few hours, the village's depth of preserved history — from craft workshops to communal dwellings — means most visitors plan considerably longer than a simple pass-through.
