Connecticut River Byway is a federally certified National Scenic Byway tracing the Connecticut River along New Hampshire's western border. It runs from West Chesterfield in the south to Littleton in the White Mountains. The New Hampshire portion covers roughly 274 miles of a larger, 498.7-mile byway that also runs through Vermont, certified as a National Scenic Byway in 2005. Within New Hampshire the route follows state highways 12 and 12A for much of its length, along with Route 10 through the college town of Hanover, hugging the river's east bank past farmland, covered bridges, and small river towns that grew up around 19th-century mills and ferry crossings. Because the Connecticut River forms the state line here, drivers get river views on one side and, frequently, a clear look across into Vermont on the other, making it one of the longest and most consistently scenic drives in the state.
