The General John Stark Scenic Byway loops 34 miles through Goffstown, Dunbarton, New Boston, and Weare, tracing the home ground of New Hampshire's best-known Revolutionary War hero. Designated in 2008, the byway is named for General John Stark, credited with the state motto 'Live Free or Die' and remembered for leading troops at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775 and the Battle of Bennington in 1776. In Dunbarton, the route passes the Page homestead where Stark met and married Elizabeth 'Molly' Page, along with the cannon named for her that was captured from the British at Bennington, and the Molly Stark House where she lived during his long absences at war. Farther along, a 1,415-pound Paul Revere bell still hangs atop the New Boston Community Church, and the Caleb Stark Statue honors the general's son, who also served in the Revolution. The Stark Cemetery in Dunbarton closes out a drive built almost entirely around one family's Revolutionary War legacy.
