The Lake Sunapee Scenic Byway circles 39 miles around Lake Sunapee in central New Hampshire, linking the towns of New London, Newbury, and Sunapee. The route winds through rural New England countryside of forested hills and open fields. Rather than a continuous lakeside drive, the route offers intermittent glimpses and occasional panoramic views of the lake and the largely undeveloped mountainsides that surround it, framed by stops in the villages of Sunapee Harbor and Newbury Harbor and by The Fells, a historic estate and garden. Mount Sunapee anchors the region on its southern end. Lake Sunapee is considered one of the cleanest lakes in New Hampshire, and the byway serves as a gateway to boating, swimming, and biking in summer and downhill and cross-country skiing, ice-boating, and maple sugaring in winter. It's one of 21 routes in the state's Scenic and Cultural Byways Program.
