Mount Willard Carriage Road is not a drivable route in the ordinary sense. It's the abandoned 19th-century carriage road that once carried guests of the long-vanished Crawford House hotel to the summit of Mount Willard, overlooking Crawford Notch in the White Mountains. Decades of erosion have left the old roadbed passable only on foot, and today it survives as a well-known 3.2-mile out-and-back hiking trail starting at the historic Crawford Depot, crossing the railroad tracks, and climbing steadily to the mountaintop. The reward at the top is one of the most photographed views in the White Mountains: Mount Willey rising on one side, Mount Webster on the other, and the deep glacial trough of Crawford Notch running between them. Because the road no longer functions as a vehicle route, this entry describes a hiking destination reached from a scenic corridor rather than a scenic drive in its own right.
