The Millstone Valley Scenic Byway covers 27 miles in central New Jersey, mostly in Somerset County with small stretches into Mercer and Middlesex counties. It traces the Millstone River on River Road to the west and the historic Delaware and Raritan Canal on Canal Road to the east. New Jersey designated the route a state scenic byway in 2001 and it became one of just two New Jersey byways to earn National Scenic Byway status in 2009. The land between the two roads now forms Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, where 160 bird species have been recorded, 90 of them nesting locally, alongside opportunities for walking, fishing, and canoeing along the old towpath. The valley carries real historical weight from the Revolutionary War, early Dutch and American settlement, and the 19th-century canal era, all interpreted at the byway's visitor center in the Griggstown Bridgetender's House, open weekends from April through October.
