The Pine Barrens Scenic Byway runs roughly 130 miles across five South Jersey counties, from Tuckerton in the north down to Dennisville and Port Elizabeth in the south. It cuts through the heart of the New Jersey Pinelands, crossing Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, and Ocean counties. The Federal Highway Administration designated the route a National Scenic Byway in 2021, recognizing dense pine forest, blackwater rivers, cedar swamps, and expansive bogs that support species found almost nowhere else in the state. The byway threads 12 historic districts, including Batsto Village, an ironworks and glassmaking community that supplied the Continental Army with iron during the Revolutionary War and now operates as a preserved historic site. Small, distinctive Pinelands villages along the route retain a genuinely rural, insular culture shaped by generations of relative isolation, and the byway offers camping, hunting, canoeing, and swimming across some of the least-developed public land remaining in the densely populated Northeast corridor.
