The Warren Heritage Scenic Byway follows Route 57 for 21 miles from Hackettstown to Lopatcong, tracing a path first established by the Lenni Lenape. It once connected campsites, villages, hunting grounds, and fishing spots across what is now Warren County. In 1806, a turnpike was built along this same alignment between Phillipsburg and Morristown to handle growing traffic, and the corridor later carried the first concrete highway built in New Jersey, completed in 1912. Along the drive, the historic Morris Canal is still visible in places; when it opened in 1831, its 109 miles and 34 locks and 23 inclined planes overcame the steepest elevation change of any canal built anywhere in the world. The byway also reaches the Musconetcong River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River known for its trout fishing, giving this mountain-and-canal corridor both deep history and genuine outdoor recreation.
