Central Adirondack Trail follows NY Route 28 for roughly 150 miles between Glens Falls and Rome, New York, through the heart of the Adirondacks. The horseshoe-shaped route begins at Cooper's Cave Bridge and threads past Lake George, the celebrated Adirondack Experience museum (long known as the Adirondack Museum), and several of the rustic 'Great Camps' built by Gilded Age industrialists as summer retreats deep in the mountains. Along the way, forested peaks and dozens of lakes fill the view, with lakeside villages breaking up long stretches of cedar-covered wilderness. At its western end, the byway reaches Fort Stanwix National Monument in Rome, a reconstructed Revolutionary War-era fort, and the restored Erie Canal Village nearby, adding colonial and canal-era history to a drive otherwise defined by mountain scenery. The route's theme ties together several distinct eras of New York history, from colonial times through the Gilded Age camps to the 19th-century canal boom, making it one of the more historically layered byways in the Adirondack Park.
