The Durham Valley Scenic Byway covers 21 miles through the towns of Durham and Windham on the northernmost escarpment of the Catskill Mountains. It runs from the summit of Mount Pisgah along Ginseng Ridge past Windham High Peak. New York first designated these roads scenic in 1991, a year before the state's formal Scenic Byways program existed, but it took until August 25, 2022, for Governor Kathy Hochul to sign the law formally adding them to the New York State Scenic Byways System. The byway's signature feature is its 'five-state view,' a sweeping panorama from high points along the route that takes in the Hudson Valley, the Berkshires, and parts of Vermont, Connecticut, and New Hampshire, with the Adirondacks visible to the north. The valley floor below retains a real agricultural character, with dairy cows, sheep, and horses grazing fields still worked by descendants of the original settlers, and many of its historic farmhouses are listed on the Greene County Historical Register.
