Lakes to Locks Passage is a 230-mile All-American Road across northeastern New York, linking the Hudson River to Lake Champlain and the Canadian border. It holds the rare distinction of triple designation, as a New York State Scenic Byway, a National Scenic Byway, and an All-American Road, the federal program's highest honor, reserved for routes with no equivalent anywhere else in the country. The byway follows the Upper Hudson River, the Champlain Canal, Lake George, and Lake Champlain through six counties, from Waterford at the Erie Canal's eastern end north to Rouses Point on the Quebec border, where in Canada the same waterway corridor continues as the Route du Richelieu. Thirty-two designated Waypoint Communities dot the route, ranging from Adirondack hamlets to small historic cities, and the drive passes sites tied to both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, when control of these interconnected waterways was repeatedly fought over. Few American byways combine this much water, history, and cross-border continuity into one continuous corridor.

What is an All-American Road?

All-American Roads are the top tier of America's National Scenic Byways. To earn the title a road has to be a destination in its own right — offering features so exceptional, across several intrinsic qualities (scenic, natural, historic, cultural, archaeological or recreational), that they can't be found anywhere else.
