The Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway runs 41 miles through the heart of the northern Catskill Mountains, threading three historic mountain notches: Kaaterskill, Stony, and Platte Cloves. New York first designated them scenic corridors in 1992. The byway earned recognition as the first scenic byway in the Catskill Park after the state's Scenic Roads program transitioned into the modern NYS Scenic Byways Program in the late 1990s. Along the drive, mountain vistas, clear streams, and rolling farmland surround historic hamlets including Hunter, Tannersville, and Lanesville. This is the same landscape the Hudson River School painters — Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and Asher B. Durand among them — captured in canvases now held in museums worldwide, and driving the cloves today offers essentially the same views that inspired that 19th-century movement. Shopping, dining, and lodging in Hunter and Tannersville give the byway a livelier, more visited character than some of the Catskills' quieter back roads.
